Apple’s “Hey Siri Event” Recap

So another Apple event has come and gone and with it a new iPhone has been shown off. While the headliner was of course the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, Apple also took off the covers on several new devices that actually took some of the attention (in my opinion) from the newer iPhones. So finally, in no particular order, the major Apple announcements at their Sept 9th press event.

Operating Systems: iOS 9, WatchOS 2 launched for all current iOS 8 devices and the Apple Watch.

Apple Watch: New band colors and bands from notable brands such as Hermes and a new Rose Gold finish for the Watch Sport and the regular Watch.

Apple TV: One of the surprise announcements of the event was the brand new Apple TV. The new (and taller) Apple TV has received a complete overhaul in terms of specifications, including AC WiFi, a new remote, Bluetooth controller hybrid, with Siri integration, an Apple A8 processor, and the brand new TVOS, which brings a new Application Store to the Apple TV which promises to release a whole new world of potential for Apple’s “hobby.” The new Apple TV will start at $149 and will also include a $199 variant with more storage as well and will launch later this year.

iPad: In the iPad realm of announcements, Apple unveiled its long rumored iPad Pro, a 12.9 inch monster of a tablet that aims to take aim at the Microsoft Surface with its own stylus in the Apple Pencil, a $99 dollar stylus with an integrated sensor list that aims to out perform the “Pen” of the Surface. Apple also showed off a keyboard cover in leu of the Surface’s type cover that will start at $169. The iPad Pro, will start at $799 and it will come with an Apple A9X processor and 4GB of RAM and have four brand new stereo speakers instead of the standard two which promises to dramatically boost the audio performance of the iPad. Finally, Apple showed off the iPad mini 4, which is the iPad Air 2 in a smaller form factor, with an Apple A8 and Touch ID.

iPhone: The hallmark of any Apple centered event is info on the next iPhone and this event did not disappoint.  The iPhone 6S and 6S plus bring a very similar visual aesthetic to that of the 6 (because it’s an “S” year) with some awesome new upgrades. The camera has been bumped to 12 megapixels and is capable of 4K recording. The front facing has seen a bump to 5 megapixels, and now has a flash that is built-in to the display. The sizes have remained the same at 4.7″ and 5.5″ respectively. They are both running on the A9 processor, 2GB of RAM and feature a slightly smaller battery. One of the major new features is “3D Touch” which allows app icons to produce quick shortcuts depending on how hard it is tapped or pressed. This effect applies to multiple applications all over iOS and has multiple functions. Finally, the biggest and most important part of the iPhone announcement… Rose Gold is now a color option.

Those who want to learn more about the new devices, including prices, release information or want to catch the keynote can find all that info here.

So what was your favorite announcement?
